Cyclone Idai caused massive destruction and displacement in and around Beira. The houses of half a million people were partially or completely destroyed, at least 110,000 people are staying in camps, and the city quickly faced an outbreak of cholera.
While VNG International’s project activities are on hold, our locally based project manager, Peter van Tongeren, played an important role in the immediate response to the cyclone and continues to support reconstruction efforts. Currently, he is supporting the municipality to carry out a damage assessment. This assessment will also guide VNG International in finding how to best support the city of Beira through our projects in the coming years, given the changed context.
The DEALS programme has also contributed extra funds from its flexible response programme to contribute to the municipality’s efforts to restore infrastructure.
