On July 8th the Burundian Association of Municipalities (ACO-BURUNDI) organised its yearly conference ‘La Journée de la Commune’, the day of the commune, financed by the SDLG programme. The Sustainable Development through improved Local Governance (SDLG) Programme in Burundi aims to empower citizens to be better informed and claim accountability to engage in inclusive decision-making. It is a programme that capitalises on the results of the previous IDEAL programme that ran from 2017-2021.
Burundi is one of the poorest and most challenging countries in the world regarding advancing land governance and contributing to sustainable socio-economic development. With a rapidly growing population and a vast majority of that population depending on agriculture for their food and livelihoods, land scarcity is an acute challenge for the country. This challenge is exacerbated by the fact that land governance in Burundi is characterized by a weak government and high levels of traditional and informal land governance procedures.
The Strategic Partnership between the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and VNG International is 5-year programme, focused on 4 thematic priorities: Security & Rule of Law, Migration, Local Revenue Mobilisation, and Integrated Water Management. Implementation countries are Burundi BDI, DR Congo DRC, Ethiopia ETH, Sudan SDN, South Sudan SSD, Uganda UGD.
IDEAL (Inclusive Decisions At Local Level) is a programme by VNG International implemented in seven countries facing fragility or conflict: Burundi, Mali, Palestine, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda. Despite the diverging contexts and topics in the IDEAL programme, we still pursue one common overall objective: Involving citizens in local governance in order for local authorities to better deal with fragility risks.
To guard this objective, each of the seven country programmes is centred around the same three outcomes:
